Infrastructure for studying vectors and associated pathogens

An insectarium for understanding the transmission of pathogens by arthropod vectors and for disease vector control.

Dispositifs pour étudier les vecteurs

Two Emerg'in facilities allows to study arthropod-vector-borne diseases: The main one is the 112-m2 Baillarguet insectarium platform of UMR ASTRE and UMR INTERTRYP. PFIE experimental facilities can also host experiments with ticks in particular.

• An insectarium to understand pathogen transmission and for disease vector control

The Baillarguet insectarium (UMR ASTRE/ UMR INTERTRYP) in BSL2 confinement allows the breeding and experimentation on arthropods: ticks, tsetse flies, culicoids and mosquitoes. This facility is connected to BSL2 and BSL3 containment laboratories and animal facilities of UMR ASTRE. Close links have been established with the “Vectopole Sud” (http://www.vectopole-sud.fr/), the Montpellier network of facilities for research on arthropods of medical, veterinary and agricultural interest.

Main vectors and vector-borne diseases currently studied but not limited to:

  • Culicoids
  • Glossins
  • Aedes and Culex mosquitoes
  • Ticks (Hyalomma marginatum, Ornithodoros)
  • Vector-borne diseases due to level 2 and 3 pathogens can also be studied (ovine catarrhal fever, human and animal trypanosomoses, african swine fever ...) in partnership with ASTRE and INTERTRYOP UMR scientists.

  • Multipurpose rooms regulated in temperature and hygrometry and with controlled lighting, allowing the breeding and the maintenance of various species of vectors;
  • Two rooms equipped with climatic chambers for the breeding of vectors as well as the study of their life history traits;
  • Air filtration and treatment of effluent to ensure containment levels;
  • Housing capacity in the animal facility linked to the insectarium: rodent (1200) and rabbit (50).

• Services available

Some services are provided via collaborations with research Units.

  • Study of vector competence by experimental infections with pathogens: host / vectors / pathogens
  • Development of molecular tools for the taxonomy and diagnosis of pathogens transmitted by these vectors
  • Study of life history traits of arthropods to better understand their bio-ecology
  • Development of innovative methods of vector control and evaluation of biocides.
